Top Takeaway awards, Birmingham style!

hungryhouse curry on the sofa

Lets face it, sometimes you want to sit in your PJs and eat tasty food instead of having to face the world.  And much as I would love to work my way through all the fine takeaways of Birmingham, that would require a lot of effort – and probably require me to move house several times.

So thankfully the good folk at hungryhouse have done some number crunching which has resulted in the Top Takeaway awards.  Unlike some high school prom, this isn’t just a popularity contest; they’ve taken into consideration high Food Hygiene Rating scores as well as fab food and exceptional service.  From more than 10,000 restaurants on hungryhouse, only 500 are awarded with ‘Top Takeaway’ status, and luckily for the good people of Birmingham, loads of our takeaways have been awarded this year.

top takeawayOver 30 takeaways in and around Birmingham were awarded with a hungryhouse Top Takeaway award this year and they’re all available on a dedicated Birmingham section on the hungryhouse website, split them into cuisines to make all our lives easier.  Along with profiles of the top ranking takeaways and info in their most popular dish there are links to their menus so you can find out what all the fuss is about.  There’s also a search box for users to find Top Takeaways in their area, or if you’re at a friends and in need of curry.

The top picks of Top Takeaways in Birmingham are…

HCF Chinese Takeaway (Chinese)
55 Wheatsheaf Road, B691SL

Omar Khayam (Indian) – Have also been ranked No.8 in the overall UK list of Top Takeaways

And what better way to celebrate than with some free food?  The good folk at hungryhouse have given me five £10 hungryhouse vouchers to give to some lucky readers.  Entering is pretty simple, just check the rafflecopter below…

Congratulations to Sarah L, Kim N, Zoey P, Keith H and Martin F for winning the vouchers!

Disclosure: This post is in collaboration with hungryhouse. And as such I saved you the nightmare that is seeing me in my PJs shovelling curry into my face, because no one needs to see that.

Most disappointing meal was at restaurant in Birmingham! The food was too ginger-y, undercooked and downright unedible. Complained the the manager and was offered a discount and meal swap, then denied the discount when it came time to pay! Manager called the police on us, who quickly realized we were in the right, and let us go freely.

I ordered a pizza delivery at the weekend a fortnight ago and it was delivered burnt, cold and the ham was off the poorest quality that unfortunately most of it went in the bin. Waste of £20

Last week I had planned a delicious meal but the main ingredient didn’t come in the supermarket delivery so I couldn’t make it. It would be great to have a delivery that didn’t disappoint 🙂

Worst meal I will never forget! was in a Chinese restaurant in London, meant to be the “be all and end all, proper fancy”, and being a vegan, I ordered the vegetarian noodles, which they had assured me was vegan. gave me the food, looked delightful- first bite- MASSIVE piece of prawn. Went and threw up and couldn’t eat another thing! And when we refused to pay just for my meal as they messed it up, manager kicked up a fuss saying they had apologised and was “human error”. URGH. Never had any issues with a takeaway so…

My most disappointing meal was a famous french restaurant in London ( I won’t name it). Took a 4 course meal, but the portions were so small, when we left we were still so hungry, so went to get big macs at McDonalds. A hungryhouse voucher would be great because the food is tasty and the portions are horse-size 😉

My most disappointing meal was from a local pizza restaurant. It was cold and the base was uncooked and doughy 🙁 Would love to win the voucher because I hear there are some other great takeaway places nearby that I would love to try! 🙂

My most disappointing meal was last week in a supermarket Cafe. The chips tasted funny. Not only that but the next day my son aged 10 ended up with a funny tummy and kept having to rush to the toilet! Since then we haven’t eaten out and feel anxious about doing to again. If we won this voucher and had a lovely meal at Hungry Horse it would make us all feel safer at eating out again.

A very horrible roast meal at a local carvery The vegetables were burnt and the turkey was still bleeding. It also looked like one of the Yorkshire puddings had been dropped on the floor because it was covered in fluff. It was such a shame because it was a birthday meal. A tasty meal at a Hungry Horse would be a lovely memory.

Sometimes I tend to burn my Meatball surprise by leaving it in the oven too long! I think hungry house could definitely make up for that!!

We had a very disappointing Chinese take away recently too! I collected, and when I got home one of the meals was completely wrong. I didn’t want to go all of the way back, so we started eating and the other meal just wasn’t up to the usual standard. Really put us off our local Chinese!

I tried to make a garlic chicken and rice recipe in the slow cooker last week. The rice ended up in one big congealed mass, it was totally inedible! Although our greedy cat didn’t think so! Please help me out and make one less meal time disaster!

My most disappointing meal would have to be at our local pub (now changed hands). I remember having the lasagne and barely eating any because it tasted so cheesy and plastic! A voucher would be great as there are a lot of lovely takeaways near by that I know do very tasty food!

My most disappointing meal was a new chilled frozen meal from the supermarket. I had to microwave it, and upon eating found a piece of wood inside!!!

My most disappointing meal was last week, when I tried to make spaghetti and meatballs. Unfortunately the phone rang, just as it was simmering, and by the time I got back to the food it was stuck to the pan and tasted like burning! A hungryhouse voucher would have saved the day then!

My most disappointing meal was many years ago in a hotel in Majorca, it consisted of a fried egg … in gravy. Anything would be an improvement on that.

My most disappointing meal was the chicken pasta dish I was really looking forward to, I over seasoned it and then forgot to get it out of the oven and dried it out completely! So a hungryhouse voucher would make it better because I wouldn’t be let loose cooking my own food 🙂

Too many to pick one. Mainly its bland, under-seasoned or cold food that arrives after a 45 min wait 🙁

My most disappointing meal was from an other pub chain – even now I remember the hard bullet like peas, watery tasteless scampi – I think the chips were okay.
The voucher would let me treat the family to a mid month takeout, and experience some tasty food

Probably the worst meal was a takeaway from a local pizza place, one of the pizza’s was burnt and the toppings were inedible and ended up having a cheese sandwich 🙁 Needless to say, they’ve not had any of our business since 🙂 A voucher would go towards trying out a new takeaway, probably a chinese … Mmmmm

My most disappointing meal was ordering from our favourite indian restaurant on mothers day and the curry was nothing like usual. It was stringy and tasted strange nothing like the Pasanda that usually comes. It ruined a great day.

My worst meal ever was in a pub we had been to quite a few times when we went to the coast (shadn’t “name and shame”) but we waited ages for it. They weren’t THAT busy (having worked in a pub which served food) so not sure what the wait was all about. When it came the napkins were wet, OK not a biggie. My Mum’s tuna sandwich tasted of nothing, not even fish. The chips looked like they had come from the fish & chip shop next door and were yesterday’s chips they had got out of the bin and reheated. My Hunters’ Chicken was barely cooked (wasn’t even “warm”). We sent this back. Only to have it reheated and slapped back on the plate (no “presentation” at all) and the chips weren’t even replaced, so they came back almost cold and looking even worse than they did the first time round. We managed to get our money back as the staff couldn’t (or wouldn’t) tell us why the food was so sub-standard, why we had to wait or why the napkins were soaking wet! 🙁

When we last ordered a curry takeaway it took extra long to arrive and had to chase up a few times then when the order arrived it was not correct so they had to come back again with the correct food. We were starving by then
